The Friary – Historical Adaptive Re-Use
Location: Louisville, Kentucky
Architect: WorK Architecture + Design, LLC
This project is a $7.5 million restoration and redevelopment project funded by Develop Louisville, the Kentucky Housing Corporation, Louisville Metro Housing Authority and PNC Real Estate. The design will add 29 affordable housing units at 501 E. Liberty, just outside of the downtown Central Business District in the Phoenix Hill neighborhood.
The Friary dates to 1899 and has seen its share of additions and reconfigurations in the past century; at its peak in the mid-1920s and 30s, it was home to as many as 15 priests and eight brothers, according to a Courier Journal story published in 2017. It’s been on the National Register of Historic places since 1982.
